My dear sister is a purveyor of fine lilies in Northern Alabama, near Athens. When I visited her earlier this year, she sent me home with a couple lilies in pots, variety unknown, which I dutifully planted next to our garden fence (a prime piece of real estate if photosynthesis is your thing). She told me she would tell me what they were when they bloomed.
That day has arrived for one of the plants, although it took me awhile to finally see it in full bloom because apparently some varieties, including this one, open at night and then close during the day. Here it is, in all its natural splendor. There are few things so beautiful as a flower after a good hard rain.
