“Creativity Takes Courage”

Henri Matisse

Bathers by a River (Henri Matisse - 1909-16)

Matisse was born on this day in 1869. Anyone who practices the visual arts owes him a debt of gratitude because he was one of a small number of artists who, around the beginning of the 20th Century, began to push the envelope with the use of abstraction and especially color. He was, of course, ridiculed for his work as most real visionaries are. The visual arts would be very different were it not for Matisse and his courage more than 100 years ago.
